This wonderful, “Open Plum Blossom” design (famous as the Crest of Tenjin, the god of learning) with Paulownia, has been hand worked on rare Chirimen Silk, and “Couched” with handmade Pure Gold threads.

The Plum represents charm and innocence, while the Paulownia is considered a “Tree of Good Fortune.”  This is an exquisite free hand embroidered heirloom, using only natural dyes for the silk threads. It is the only half of the original collar to survive.  As Wedding Collars often carry a seasonal motif, this wedding would have taken place in the latter part of Winter, as the Plum Blossom (“Ume”) blooms in the end of Winter, and is welcomed as a harbinger of Spring.  It is also considered one of the “Three Friends of Winter.”

It is very unusual to find hand worked Kimono Collars from this period in good condition, as the majority were so badly soiled from the bride’s cosmetics that they have disintegrated over time.

TYPE TEXTILE:  Wedding Collar: Some of the most rare and unusual Japanese textiles to survive into the 20th Century are examples of works of art created as Wedding Collars. For added adornment, upper class Japanese women would create these one of a king pieces of art which would then be attached to the leading edge of the wedding kimono.

APPROXIMATE DATE OR PERIOD:  Early Meiji Era (1868 - 1911)

FABRIC CONTENT and CONDITION:  What makes this Collar even more distinctive is the fact that it was hand woven of Chirimen Silk, a crepe-like silk that has not been created in Japan since the 1800s, as the actual weaving process has been lost. In addition, the Pure Gold threads are made entirely by hand by first painting a layer of liquid gold on thin handmade paper, and then wrapping it around several threads of silk.  Because of its delicacy, it could not be sewn into the fabric; but was, instead, laid on top of the fabric, and then hand stitched to it.

FINISHED SIZE:  16 3/4” high  x 10 1/2” wide
