Description
This wonderful, “Open Plum Blossom” design (famous as the Crest of Tenjin, the god of learning) with Paulownia, has been hand worked on rare Chirimen Silk, and “Couched” with handmade Pure Gold threads.
The Plum represents charm and innocence, while the Paulownia is considered a “Tree of Good Fortune.” This is an exquisite free hand embroidered heirloom, using only natural dyes for the silk threads. It is the only half of the original collar to survive. As Wedding Collars often carry a seasonal motif, this wedding would have taken place in the latter part of Winter, as the Plum Blossom (“Ume”) blooms in the end of Winter, and is welcomed as a harbinger of Spring. It is also considered one of the “Three Friends of Winter.”
It is very unusual to find hand worked Kimono Collars from this period in good condition, as the majority were so badly soiled from the bride’s cosmetics that they have disintegrated over time.
