Description
The arts and crafts traditions of the people of Old Japan, or Mingei, are some of the most beautiful and artistic works of art, even though they were originally intended for everyday use. Many of them have been created by individuals who would now be considered Master Craftsmen. The techniques used were developed through a long history dating back for hundreds of years through which domestic objects have since become ornamental as well as useful.
These Kashigata or Sweet Molds combine utility, ornamental and esthetic elements in an on-living form of sculpture. They were originally meant to create sweet confections to accompany the Green Tea of the formal Tea Ceremony. They were hand carved (the more intricate, the more valuable), usually of Mountain Cherry Wood or Sakuranoki.
Unfortunately, due to industrialized mass production, these humble anonymous craftsmen have mainly disappeared making these wonderful Sweet Molds are much more difficult to find.
