Description
An antique Japanese Water Dropper or “Suiteki.” In Romaji, the word to describe this useful art instrument is “Suichuu,” or almost anything with a spout, a handle and two small holes for water and air.
In Japan, the ancient art of Calligraphy or “Sho shodo” (the way of writing) is highly respected, as are the individuals who practice it most proficiently. This is an Asian type of brush painting that uses black ink in varying concentrations exclusively. It is also referred to as “ink wash painting” or “Sumi-e” and was considered the provenance of the the “literati.” The composition reflected everything the artist wished to express using the least amount of line, shading and color. The difficulty of achieving great works of Calligraphy or Sumi-e is that once a brush stroke as been painted, it cannot be changed or eliminated. Therefore, this style of art demands intense concentration, skill, and years of training.
The Sumi-e artist would only use the hand made Japanese Washi Paper in his art, while all his implements would be contained in a specialty writing box called “Suzuribako.”
The Water Dropper is an integral part of the whole process; not only in its use in controlling the amount of water added to the black ink stone, but also in the purity of the process…i.e. the higher the level of artistry in each of the instruments, the greater the standing of the artist.
This finely molded and wonderfully ornamental Water Dropper is embellished with a flying dragonfly and a sinuous dragon, each appearing on the top of the Dropper to one side of the decorative handle. In addition to its usefulness in art, this marvelous antique water dropper would make an extraordinary paper weight on anyone’s desktop!
