Rare antique Famille-verte Porcelain Lion Dog (also known as Temple Dogs) which were considered good luck in expelling evil…an unparalleled omen.
Completely hand modeled, this reclining Lion Dog demonstrates superb workmanship: the openwork “silk ball” rotates as does his tongue; and, by surviving the potter’s kiln baking became, not just a work of art, but also a play thing for a very wealthy noble or scholar’s desk.
Apart from the apparent fine details on the Lion Dog, the color palette of green, Auvergne, yellow and black (referred to as the Famille-verte over glaze by Europeans) are softly brilliant in tone. This feature characterizes the best of the ancient Chinese Famille-verte color style. And, although this style of enamel still appears on modern Chinese porcelain, the heavy and overly glossy appearance of the new cannot compete with the delicate vibrancy of the old school porcelains of which this is a truly magnificent example.
