Description
This is a stunning example of a Japanese Man’s “Haori” or formal topcoat. It is entirely handmade, totally reversible, and has represented the height of formal ware for Japanese men for centuries. ‘The outer layer of the garment is a heavy, high quality, solid black Satin Silk with the exception of 5 white circles within which a pictorial symbol of the family crest or “Mon” appears (bottom photo). The crest is that of the Wisteria or “Fuji,” which is one of the most graceful and intricate of the traditional Japanese motifs. The Wisteria is often singled out for admiration in wisteria viewing parties held as early as the year 897. The most famous family using the Wisteria as its crest were the Fujiwara’s, whose name, when translated literally, means “field of wisteria.”
What makes the Haori for men so intriguing is the fact that the main source of decoration is on the inside of the garment (shown left) or the lining. The burnished gold Silk lining extends around to the front of the garment, while the woven back panel is an elegantly hand woven design of a famous landmark rock formation in the Inland Sea with a tranquil boating scene. The richness of the panel includes pure yellow and white gold threads for a stunning Haori that could only have been owned by an individual of high status and wealth.
